New Zealand: Tongariro Alpine Crossing
This 19.4 km one-way trek spans volcanic alpine landscape of dramatic contrasts – steaming vents, glacial valleys, ancient lava flows, alpine vegetation and vivid crater lakes.

Tongariro is a UNESCO dual World Heritage Area and was the first in the world to receive cultural World Heritage Status.

I photographed this at the foot of the larger of the three Emerald Lakes - The Emerald Lakes fill explosion craters near the summit of Mt Tongariro. Their brilliant colors are partly caused by dissolved minerals, washed down from the thermal area of nearby Red Crater.
